Halls are vital to rural communities, and important in towns too.

There are around 10,000 halls in England:

  • Half provide health and wellbeing services
  • A third house preschools and nurseries
  • Three quarters are a venue for arts and cultural activity
  • 1 in 10 provide retail services
  • and over 70% provide access to sport

Halls are run by volunteers who on average give 18 hours a week to run the hall and fundraise.

Halls can't stand still. As well as building repairs:

  • over half of halls are planning improvements to their premises
  • over a third find it difficult to recruit volunteers
  • over 20% struggle to meet legal requirements
  • a third exclude some activities because of red tape

Lobbying for good support from district and county councils as well as funding from lottery money will be a key part of the way forward for halls. Join Devon Communities Together to debate the issues, find solutions and spread the word.
